What is a robot?

Robotics is the study and application of machines programmed to simulate or replace human tasks, using technology. Robots have long been employed in dangerous or dirty environments as a source of aid; complex jobs requiring precision and consistency; productivity increases across a variety of industries – these applications all apply here too!

What comes to mind when you imagine robots? Perhaps a silvery android from The Day the Earth Stood Still or C-3PO. Or it could be Roomba, autonomous drones or self-driving cars – there’s no standard definition for what constitutes a robot! But reality can sometimes surprise us.

Some roboticists believe the term “robot” should refer only to physical machines incorporating artificial intelligence in their design, such as physical robots that sense, think and act. As an indicator of whether something qualifies as a robot or not, roboticists often use “sense, think and act” as a litmus test; but this definition only scratches the surface; more specific scientific tests would likely prove otherwise – for instance that your cat or 3 axis CNC mill doesn’t count!

What makes a robot “smart”?

There is no clear answer; simply consult 10 roboticists and you will hear 10 distinct definitions, from physical embodiment to autonomy. For instance, Brooks does not consider a dishwasher to be a robot since its main functionality is to measure speed against an preset limit while Gill Pratt considers any home thermostat that recognizes objects and their states to be robots.

Smart robots rely on sensor devices to sense their environment and a central processing unit (CPU) for receiving input from these sensors and relaying commands to actuators. Sensors include vision, hearing, touch distance sensors and locators as well as more complex technical devices like gyroscopes or laser range finders.

But Tee’s goal is that robots should become sufficiently perceptive to recognize what they’re doing, for instance by seeing or feeling an object and understanding if its lifting requires sufficient grip force – something which would constitute true intelligence in robots.

How do robots sense and compute?

Robots use sensors to assess their environment and decide how best to interact with it. Sensors may include touch, vision, olfaction (smelling), force and temperature sensors that transmit their readings back to their controller or computer system; it then processes these readings before sending control signals back out through its actuators to make the robot “smart.” This cycle makes up what we know as robot intelligence.

How do robots act?

As robots become a regular part of people’s lives, it is essential that their design allows for human comfort. This means ensuring they look like animals or toys instead of people and refraining from performing any gestures that could be misconstrued as suspicious. Furthermore, any societal guidelines regarding robot behavior must be enforced so people feel secure about their safety.
